Is Invisalign Teen a treatment alternative for malocclusions?
Posted on 10/21/2016

Invisalign Teen is an alternative to conventional metal braces for teenagers. Like conventional braces, Invisalign Teen can move teeth to healthy, straight positions and improve the way that teeth make contact when the mouth is closed (the occlusion). A malocclusion is a bite where the teeth make improper or inadequate contact during oral function. Invisalign and Invisalign Teen can help with improving some issues with one’s occlusion such as overbites and underbites. After an examination with our orthodontist, our team can determine whether Invisalign is the appropriate treatment protocol for an improper bite.

What is Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign Teen is a clear and comfortable orthodontic system that was developed specifically for the unique needs of teenagers. This treatment option is discreet and unique because it does not involve the use of fixed orthodontic appliances. Instead, patients will wear removable appliances called aligners. Made from plastic, clear aligners are worn for at least 22 hours a day and are taken out for oral hygiene and meals.

How is Invisalign Teen different from Invisalign?

Invisalign Teen has a few unique characteristics that are beneficial for teenagers when compared to the original Invisalign system. It is designed to accommodate growing teeth – especially molars. Invisalign Teen has extra space at the back of its aligners to accommodate the eruption and positioning of molars. In fact, this space and accommodation of molar eruption can help guide these teeth to their rightful positions. Aligners also have unique ridges that assist with moving the roots of teeth into place.

Although Invisalign can be taken in and out of the mouth, successful treatment relies on these aligners being worn long enough each day. Invisalign Teen features indicators that signify how long they have been worn so that our team can accurately evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

How do I know if Invisalign Teen is right for me?

The only way to be certain that this form of orthodontic treatment meets your needs is to talk with our orthodontist. Some teenagers may require conventional braces. A consultation and oral examination will help our team plan the best treatment for you.
